In the U.K., every one in eight men is diagnosed with a common mental illness. For men under 35, the leading cause of death is suicide.

It's time for society to talk about men's mental health. As a gentleman, taking care of your mind is crucial to maintaining your well-being.

Are you feeling down or stressed lately? Do you want helpful strategies to improve your mental health?

Check out these five tips every modern gentleman should know.

1. Take a Time-Out

When you're feeling stressed, overwhelmed, angry, or depressed, it's essential to take a break. Your busy day can wait.

Start by taking some deep breaths. It's not just a bunch of woo; deep breaths reset your body's fight or flight response, putting you back in the driver's seat. Pour yourself a glass of water and sit down for a few minutes to take in your emotions.

Men are often told to ignore their feelings, but our emotions tell us about ourselves and our surroundings. How would you describe what you feel in your mind and body? What could have triggered these feelings?

2. Invest in Yourself

Invest some time into exercising and maintaining healthy habits. Moving your body for just 30 minutes per day is enough to improve depression and anxiety symptoms significantly. In addition to exercise, make sure you eat a balanced diet with plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Remember that glass of water you poured? Drink about seven more of them. Water is like oil for your body's engine; you need water for your mind to run smoothly.

Lastly, don't forget the healing powers of a long, hot shower. A true gentleman prides himself on his cleanliness. Treating yourself to a relaxing shower may be all you need to refresh your mind and reset your day.

3. Set Healthy Boundaries

Sometimes it can feel like our mental health is out of our control. Our friends, families, bosses, and coworkers all have expectations for us. As men, we feel immense pressure to meet and exceed everyone's expectations.

However, setting boundaries is crucial for maintaining your mental health. Set clear, healthy boundaries with your time at work and with friends. If somebody makes you feel disrespected or uncomfortable, politely limit your interactions with them.

4. Connect and Communicate

After setting boundaries against the things that harm you, find more of the things that help you. Connect with friends and family members who encourage you to take care of yourself and express your emotions.

Make consistent efforts to communicate with people you trust. Talk to your partner, friends, and trusted family members about your mental health. These people want to support you and guide you through the good times and bad.

Expressing emotions is not a sign of weakness. On the contrary, opening up to others will make you a stronger man.

5. Meet the Pros

Many men fear the "T" word: therapy. A therapist is more than just a "paid friend." They are a designated third party, meaning you can tell them almost anything without judgment or consequence.

Think of a therapist as a mental health coach. They provide techniques and strategies to help you win in the game of life.

Psychiatrists are another helpful player on your team. Psychiatrists will help you diagnose any mental health issues and prescribe medications to help you regain control. Talking to a professional is crucial to building strong mental health, no matter which route you decide to take.

Healthy Mind, Happy Gentleman

It's time to change the way we approach mental health. By investing time into yourself, setting boundaries, and communicating openly, you can set an example for others. A true gentleman isn't afraid to ask for help.
