Allergies can be a major headache for the host or hostess. Allergies can range from life-threatening to the discomforting. Food aversions, however, are psychological; people can convince themselves towards having an allergic reaction to foods that they just hate, without any basis for this.

Obviously anyone who has an allergy, especially severe ones, must inform the host immediately clearly and succinctly about the nature of their allergy to allow the host to make any necessary arrangements. And the host must take this information seriously and ensure everything has been done to avert any disaster.

For less serious allergies, a circumspect approach must be taken. The seriousness of the problem should be weighed up against the offence and inconvenience it will cause the host. Presenting a long list of foods that you have a mild aversion to is quite unacceptable, on the other hand, if particular foods will make you ill and/or uncomfortable, then the host should be told.

Once informed the host should ensure that the offending food is withdrawn for that person. Teasing, cajoling or hectoring someone about a ‘supposed’ food intolerance is simply bad manners and shouldn’t be condoned.
